Dancing for Well-Being
We bring older people with health and mobility problems together to dance, to sing, to chat, to laugh and just have fun! The dancing we do is very accessible - you can move at your level, you can dance SITTING OR STANDING and you don’t need a good memory. It helps you improve your sense of well-being – not just physically, but emotionally and socially too. One of our members said at the end of a session – “I want to bottle this feeling and take it with me to last the week!”
We run 7 weekly groups in accessible community venues in the Harrogate District - in Harrogate’s town centre, Bilton, Hampsthwaite, Starbeck, Knaresborough (2) and Boroughbridge. We currently have 180 members and 21 volunteers who help enormously with practical tasks and creating a warm, friendly atmosphere. We also run sessions for other community groups and organisations in the district when resources allow.
In later life people want to keep active and involved in their community but this isn’t always easy. Our group members have various health and mobility problems which make life difficult, for example, arthritis, heart disease, lung conditions, Parkinson’s, dementia, MS, cancer, stroke. We also have members who are coping with bereavement or caring for their partner.
Research has shown how dancing can improve your overall sense of well-being. It’s good exercise, for the brain as well as the body, and it’s great for company and friendship. It also helps relieve tension and stress and it can really lift your spirits.
We suspended our 7 weekly groups 16th March 2020 but are continuing to support our 180 members and 21 volunteers emotionally with phone calls and emails and practically with offers to help with shopping. Since 23rd March we have been running free live 30-minute Dancing for Well-Being sessions every week-day on our Facebook page - @dancingforwellbeing. These offer uplifting and fun accessible dance activities to our members who are online (and anyone else who finds them useful) to help them keep physically active and emotionally upbeat during self-isolation.
