Supported work and skills development
Endeavour House, Thurston Road, Northallerton, NORTHALLERTON
Chopsticks (North Yorkshire) Ltd is a community business and charitable organisation based in Northallerton, North Yorkshire that provides supported work and skills development activities for adults with disabilities, and increasingly for other people who need a safe place in which to regain self-confidence and improve their wellbeing.
In 1995 a small group of resourceful people with learning disabilities, encouraged by their support workers, started to work for themselves. Under the name ‘Chopsticks’, they began to chop firewood from timber that would otherwise have gone to landfill and then sell the kindling to local people.
From this modest beginning a community benefit society was formed and this grew to help many more adults with disabilities. In 2008 we moved to our current purpose-built workshop and learning centre, where we continue to develop new ideas for work-based programmes, social activities and adult education to support the local community.
Chopsticks aims to provide a safe, fulfilling work experience for its Members, clients and volunteers, helping people to develop social interactions, increase their self-worth and provide opportunities to form strong friendships. The sense of achievement and satisfaction that comes from providing services to others is priceless. That is why we work closely with local care sector commissioners, parents and guardians to uphold our values.
Since 2016 Chopsticks has been working in partnership with a range of organisations in order to provide a broader range of work-based services to the wider community, delivering exciting and innovative projects based on practical work and the value of teamworking; thereby contributing to the challenges of social isolation and prevention of ill-health.
