The English Companions in Yorkshire (Anglo-Saxon History Group)

MALTON

About

The English Companions is a society for all those interested in the history and culture of Anglo-Saxon England. The Yorkshire group arranges visits, talks and discussions for their members on topics and places of interest to the period, almost always along with a good pub lunch! A typical programme of events for our members has included talks on key Anglo-Saxon figures, Icelandic Sagas and important archaeological finds. Visits have included local churches with Anglo-Saxon interest, such as Scrayingham, Hovingham and St Peters at Barton on Humber, as well as a walking tour of Anglian York and a weekend trip to Hastings and another to Durham & Jarrow. Our members may also choose to study our correspondence course in Old English, the language spoken in England about 500-1100 CE, and we have on-line meetings as well to keep in touch.

We can also provide visits designed for children at KS2 in line with the national curriculum, talks to local groups (these have included the WI, Probus, and local history groups), or a stall and children's activities at local events (such as the the North Yorkshire Moors family days, Library activity mornings and the annual Battle of Stamford Bridge commemoration). These activities are staffed by volunteers but we do charge to cover costs for travel and craft materials.
