The Wilberforce Trust - Club Wilber

About

The Wilberforce Trust’s vision is to see a world in which all people with sight loss, including those with other disabilities, are truly integrated in society with equal opportunities in all aspects of life and to know that our passion and commitment have been influential in bringing this about.

Up to now, the Wilberforce Trust has predominantly focused on support for adults but as an innovative charity that responds to need, we have developed a service so that we can offer out of school support and activities to children with visual impairments.

We understand that families often find their options for recreational activities limited and that activities can exclude children due to them having a visual impairment.

This is why we created Club Wilber, so that we can run adapted activities, events and trips that are suitable for families with visually impaired children and their siblings from the ages of 0 to 25 years.

Club Wilber provides a supportive environment and an opportunity to get together for families in the Yorkshire area.

Many families with visually impaired children, young people or parents don’t know anyone else in the same position and it can be a lonely experience. Our activities and events offer a chance to spend time with people that can share your experiences and gain support and advice.

We want families to enjoy stress-free inclusive family outings which do not cost the earth and all the family can enjoy on an equal level.

We started off with our adapted Easter Egg Hunt using beeping Easter Eggs.  Sighted siblings wore blindfolds and the beeping eggs were exchanged for proper chocolate ones.  It was a big hit and we appeared on ITV Calendar and won silver in the Minster FM Listener’s Choice Award for Charity Event of the Year.

It then grew throughout 2019 to include a VIP game to Leeds Rhino’s, two trips out to sea on the specially designed WetWheels boat, sensory craft sessions, animal therapy sessions, a Halloween party and a coach trip to Cadbury World.

We have big plans for Club Wilber going forward:  coach trips, holidays, weekends away, sports activities and more.

If you want to be part of this then please come join us and meet new families and make new friends.
